Victorian Horrors Shrine

In an era known for its intense sense of moral propriety, strict gender roles, and a preoccupation with mourning rituals, somehow we get some really unhinged holiday cards.

Lobsters (a LOT of lobsters) attacking children, dueling frogs, dead birds in the snow...absolutely perfect for Christmas. Well, personally I think so, I loathe the sickly sweet sentimentality of the season.

For all their strictness, Victorians had a more comfortable relationship with death than we do and their humor was much darker (jealous). And as the ability to print novelty cards was new there was a strange exuberence to greeting cards that I want to singlehandedly bring back!
